Envoryx on Unraid or hosted? Both have their place.
Envoryx was built for running at home, including on Unraid. This page says plainly when a home server is enough, when a hosted instance fits better and what moving looks like.

What is Envoryx, and what does “on Unraid” mean?
Envoryx manages development and staging environments as projects, with a web interface, their own addresses and SSH. What the software does and what hosted operation looks like is on our page Envoryx hosting.
“On Unraid” means Envoryx runs as a Docker container on your own Unraid server. It is given the server’s Docker socket and creates separate containers for each project. The Envoryx documentation calls Unraid the primary target but also says nothing depends on it. Any Linux server with Docker will do.
On Unraid you find Envoryx in the Community Apps. The project itself describes the setup, with the Docker template or manually under “Docker → Add Container”: DEPLOYMENT.md, section Unraid. According to the documentation you need Unraid 6.12 or newer. The Envoryx project is responsible for that installation, not Envbay.

When Unraid at home is enough
- You already have an Unraid server with Docker that runs anyway.
- You work on your home network or through access you set up yourself.
- Nobody but you needs access: no clients, no team.
- You want full control over hardware, network, data and backup targets.
- The costs are hardware and electricity. The software is open source.
- You want to run larger local models with Ollama on your own graphics card.
That is a complete way to work.
04Comparison
What running it at home involves
This is what the project’s documentation describes. It is no drawback, but work you should plan for.
- Names and DNS: Projects are reached under names such as
shop.test. For that you add a wildcard entry once in your network’s DNS server, for example in AdGuard Home, Pi-hole, dnsmasq or Unbound. If your router cannot do that, you keep a hosts file on every device. - HTTPS: Envoryx issues certificates through a local certificate authority. You install it as trusted on every device. With a domain of your own, Envoryx can instead obtain a public wildcard certificate from Let’s Encrypt through your DNS provider’s API. Nothing has to be reachable from the internet for that.
- Storage location: Envoryx’s database (
/config) belongs on a local file system, not on NFS or SMB. On Unraid the documentation recommends your pool’s path instead of/mnt/user. - Backups: Project backups are stored in the appdata folder by default, optionally on a share of their own on the array. You set up copies off site yourself (S3, SFTP or WebDAV). The documentation advises including
/config,/projectsand the backups in your own backup routine. - Updates: On Unraid you update through “Docker → Check for Updates → Apply”. Database migrations only go forward. Before the first migration of a new version Envoryx writes an instance backup.
- Secret key: Envoryx encrypts stored secrets with a key. Keep a copy outside Envoryx. Instance backups do not contain it. To show it, Envoryx asks for your password from version 0.46.0. When moving to another instance, you enter it while restoring.
05Comparison
When a hosted instance fits better
- Reachable from anywhere. Every project has an HTTPS address with a valid certificate, for example
project.customer.envbay.dev. You need no port forwarding on your router and no domain or certificate upkeep. - Backups off site. From Starter on, we copy instance backups to separate storage outside your instance. Project backups with a schedule go there too.
- Access for clients and team. There are plans with several users (see the table below). Clients reach previews for sign-off at an address of their own. You set up sharing and guest links yourself.
- No home server to run. No electricity, no hardware, no updates for the server and Envoryx, no troubleshooting on your home network.
- A fixed monthly price from €12 including VAT, server location EU. To try it there is the Free plan: 7 days at no cost, extendable once by 7 days.
06Comparison
When a hosted instance does not fit
- Production. Envbay is built for development and staging, is in beta and makes no availability promise.
- Ollama and local models. Free and Starter exclude the services Ollama and OpenSearch. For Team and Agency we make no promise about them for now, and a graphics card (GPU) is part of no plan. For local models, a server of your own with a suitable graphics card is the better choice.
- Full control over the server. You get Envoryx with its web interface, SSH into the project containers, SFTP and the API. There is no shell on the host and no access to the Docker socket.
- A lot of storage. Storage is limited per plan (see the table below) and HDD-based with a RAM cache.
- Data that must stay in your own house. Our servers are in the EU, not with you.
- Outgoing mail. The mail ports 25, 465 and 587 are blocked for outgoing traffic. You catch test mail with Mailpit.

Moving from Unraid to a hosted instance
Since Envoryx 0.45.0 you can move with a project backup. A backup made by another Envoryx instance can be restored into a new project. The project settings inside the backup are encrypted with the source instance’s secret key. When restoring, you enter that key. Envoryx checks it against the key ID in the backup and re-seals the settings with the key of its own instance. Envoryx does not store the key you enter. This works for downloaded backups, for backups from an offsite target and for backups from before a key replacement. The hosted instance needs Envoryx 0.45.0 or newer for this.
- 01
Secure your code
Check that your source code lives in a Git repository of your own. A backup is not a replacement for Git.
- 02
Download a backup on Unraid
In your Unraid instance open the project and its “Backups” section. Click “Create backup” and then “Download”. You get a
.tar. Among other things it contains the database dump (database.sql.gz) and the project directory. Both can also be used without Envoryx. - 03
Note the secret key of the Unraid instance
In the Unraid instance the key is under “Settings → Secret key”. “Show key” displays it, from Envoryx 0.46.0 after you confirm your password (accounts with single sign-on: after a sign-in within the last 10 minutes). Showing it is written to the audit log there. Keep the key safe.
- 04
Upload the backup in the hosted instance
In your hosted instance open “New project → Existing website” and upload the
.tar. Envoryx recognises its own backups and offers to restore it into a new project. - 05
Enter the key and restore
The dialog asks for the secret key of the Unraid instance. Enter it and choose whether databases, files and bucket objects come along. The new project gets its own name, directory and ports in the hosted instance. Restoring into a new project needs admin rights for the whole instance.
- 06
Check addresses and settings
Your project will be called
project.customer.envbay.devinstead ofproject.test. Addresses stored in the database (for example in WordPress) still point to the old one. The Envoryx documentation suggests search-and-replace for that. Check variables, workers and cron jobs in the new project.
Before moving, check which Envoryx version your Unraid instance runs. Envoryx backups from before version 0.25 do not contain workers, cron jobs, limits, health check and proxy rules. The version of the hosted instance is in the manual, chapter Updates. If it still runs a version before 0.45.0, take the route through files and a database dump (below).
Without the source’s key the route through files and a database dump remains: unpack the .tar and upload the project directory (as ZIP or tar.gz) and the dump (.sql or .sql.gz) through “New project → Existing website”. The project settings do not come along that way. You create variables, workers and cron jobs again.
The way back (from Envbay to Unraid) needs the secret key of the hosted instance. Envbay does not show this key in the customer area. According to the Envoryx documentation, an admin of the instance can show it in Envoryx under “Settings → Secret key → Show key”, after confirming their password (accounts with single sign-on: after a sign-in within the last 10 minutes). Keep a copy outside Envoryx if you want to keep the way back open. Without the key, the project directory and database dump from a downloaded backup stay usable, but the target instance cannot open the project settings.
According to the Envoryx documentation, the instance export (accounts, settings) is meant for moving a whole installation to another host of your own. We do not describe it for hosted instances. Since Envoryx 0.45.1 a hosted instance does not restore the instance backup of another instance; it takes only its own instance backups. Projects from elsewhere come over as project backups with the key of the source.

Who answers which questions?
- Questions about Envoryx itself (operation, features, bugs in the software, setup on Unraid) are answered by the project: documentation at envoryx.dev, bugs and requests as an issue on GitHub.
- Questions about a hosted instance (operations, billing, backups, availability, your account) are answered by Envbay: support@envbay.com or a ticket at my.envbay.com. The split is also in the manual under Help.

Independent provider
Envbay is an independent provider, powered by Envoryx. We are not the author of Envoryx and not an official partner of the project. Development stays with the project. Unraid is a trademark of its owner. Envbay is not affiliated with Unraid.
